O, Canada!

The other America nation may often be overlooked but Canada performs exceptionally well in the world rankings but are cracks are forming in the Canadians performance. YGO Online International takes a look at the True North’s past and its prospects for the future.

Despite being the second largest country on the planet in terms of area, Canada “only” has a population of some 33,000,000. However, despite being overshadowed most of the time by their southern neighbours, Canada is one of only two nations allowed by Konami to participate in Yu-Gi-Oh! Online from North, South or Central America.

Despite this, Canada’s lot has generally been a happy one. In Season 1, a 13th placed position acted as a springboard to reach 12th the season after that and to rise to 11th the season after that. Season 5 saw the country rise to 10th in the world, a most impressive showing and one the country holds onto today.

However, Season 6 saw Canada drop astonishingly in the amount of points garnered that season. The True North only earned 29,748 points for the whole of Season 6. However, looking back, it seems such a fall was happening since at least Season 5. From 59,000 to 39,000 to 29,000 in Season 6, Canadian participation seemed to have been dropping sharply.

This season, with under two weeks to go, Canada has only earned 24,058 points as of the time of writing. If a big leap is not made in the 10 or so days remaining in the season, Canada will have dropped to a new low in recent seasons. As the game grows, nations have to increase the amount of points gained to keep up their positions but in Canada’s case the opposite is happening.

Canada have two paths. Despite their fall in form, they are still in a prime position to eventually usurp Austria for 9th place. At the same time, even a newcomer like Macedonia can challenge Canada’s recent run and if Season 8 sees Macedonia maintain a semblance of their recent form, Canada may just begin a slide down the table.

Are Canada’s finest duelists slipping away from the game? And will anyone come to replace them? It seems that after a few seasons of highs, they may be slipping down to a more managable plateau. The coming weeks, and the following season, will be very important ones for Canadian dueling.
